AI vs. In-Person Color Analysis: Can a Selfie Really Tell the Whole Story?

Most of us have seen the advertisements. For around $20, all you need to do is upload a selfie and, within minutes, you'll receive your color season, makeup recommendations, and even a shopping guide.

It's quick, affordable, and certainly tempting. But can one photograph really determine the colors that suit you best?

The answer isn't that simple.

It Starts with the Photo

When people ask me about AI color analysis, my first thought isn't about the technology. It's about the photograph, and what happens during a consultation that a photo simply can't capture.

Every camera sees color a little differently. Lighting, shadows, white balance, makeup, hair color, camera settings, and even the screen you're viewing it on can all influence how your coloring appears. What you see on your phone isn't always what I would see standing in front of you.

That's important because AI color analysis is only as accurate as the information it's given.

Color Analysis Is About Comparison

The biggest difference between AI and an in-person consultation isn't just the technology, it's the process.

A photograph captures one moment in time. During an in-person consultation, those variables are controlled as much as possible, allowing me to compare carefully selected drapes under consistent lighting and watch how your face responds.

Does your complexion become brighter? Do shadows soften? Do your eyes appear clearer? Does your natural lip color look healthier? Or does the color draw attention away from you instead?

Sometimes the changes are dramatic, other times they're surprisingly subtle. Either way, those comparisons help me identify the palette that brings out your best.

Just as importantly, it's a learning experience. You don't simply leave with a list of colors, you leave understanding why they work. That knowledge makes shopping easier, helps you build outfits with more confidence, and gives you a better understanding of the colors you naturally reach for.

For clients whose coloring isn't straightforward, that conversation becomes even more valuable. We can compare similar shades, answer questions, and refine the palette until it feels right.

So, Which Is Better?

I think AI has introduced many people to seasonal color analysis, and that's a good thing. It's an affordable starting point and can be a convenient option for people who don't have access to an in-person color consultant nearby.

If you want to experience the changes in real time and understand why certain colors work for you, an in-person consultation is still hard to beat.

Technology will continue to improve, and I'm sure AI will evolve alongside it. But for now, there's still tremendous value in human observation, experience, and interaction.

So... can a selfie tell the whole story? It can certainly start the conversation. But in my experience, the real magic happens when we start draping.

Some things are simply better experienced than downloaded.

If you don't have access to an in-person color consultant in your area, I also offer virtual color analysis. While they aren't the same as a full draping consultation, they provide a more personalized experience than a fully automated AI assessment and are a great option for clients outside my service area.
